The Mahoning County District Board of Health will hold a rabies vaccination clinic from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, Oct. 27 at the Mahoning County Dog Warden, 1230 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown.
The cost is $8 per shot (cash only) and no appointment is necessary. Pet owners must have their pets on a leash, in a cage, or carried inside a pillowcase.
In Mahoning County, a rabies vaccination is required for all dogs, cats, and ferrets over three months of age.
This low-cost clinic does not include a physical examination of the animal. The veterinary staff reserves the right not to vaccinate any animal they believe to be in poor health.
To receive the three-year booster, bring proof of prior rabies vaccination on or after Oct. 27, 2017. Without proof of prior vaccination, the pet will receive a one-year vaccination only.
Costs are kept to a minimum through a sponsorship from the Mahoning County District Board of Health and volunteer services provided by Courtney O’Neill, D.V.M., Austintown Veterinary Clinic, and the Mahoning County Dog Warden.
Rabies is ever present in wildlife. It is a preventable, potentially deadly, viral disease most often spread through bites and scratches from unvaccinated pets, strays, and wildlife.
Individuals can protect themselves and their families from rabies by following these guidelines: vaccinate your pets; maintain control of your pets to reduce their exposure to wildlife; spay or neuter to decrease the number of stray animals; avoid contact with wildlife and stray animals; wash any animal bite areas thoroughly and follow up with a doctor.
