The 22nd Annual Butterfly Identification and Monitoring Workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 23 at Kilcawley Center on the campus of Youngstown State University.
YSU and The Youngstown Environmental and Sustainability Society, a student organization, will present the workshop with the Ohio Lepidopterists, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, and Ohio Biological Survey.
One session includes extensive identification training covering every butterfly likely to be seen in Ohio. Another will include topics such as plants that butterflies depend on, life cycles, and gardening to attract butterflies. Sessions will be concurrent so participants can focus topics of primary interest.
Other topics will include highlights of the 2018 season, how to set up and monitor your transect study area, telling moths from insects, how to preserve specimens, and population trends.
Sessions will include kits to assist beginning monitors, handouts, and networking with other enthusiasts. Specimens and posters will be on display.
Registration includes lunch and snacks. In order to ensure lunch, registration must be received by March 16. Students are encouraged to attend at no charge, but must preregister to be assured program materials.
To register, send a check for $15 ($5 without lunch) payable to The Ohio Lepidopterists. Include your name, address, phone, email and choice of turkey, beef, ham or vegetarian for lunch.
