Cuarteto Latinoamericano will perform 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 19 in Ford Family Recital Hall at the DeYor Performing Arts Center in Youngstown.

The concert is part of the Donald P. Pipino Performing Arts Series at Youngstown State University’s Cliffe College of Creative Arts. The event is co-sponsored by 88.5 WYSU-FM.

Tickets are available at DeYor. Prices are $30, $25, $5, and free for YSU students and children 12.

Founded in Mexico in 1982, Cuarteto Latinoamericano is one of the world’s most renowned classical music ensembles and has been the leading proponent of Latin American music for string quartet. The ensemble includes Saul, Aron and Alvaro Bitran and Javier Montiel.

The string quartet has been recognized with the Mexican Music Critics Association Award and three times received Chamber Music America/ASCAP’s “Most Adventurous Programming” Award. They are winners of the 2012 and 2016 Latin Grammys for Best Classical Recordings.

Cuarteto has toured extensively throughout Europe, North and South America, Israel, China, Japan and New Zealand. They have premiered more than 100 works written for them and continue to introduce new and neglected composers to the genre.

“WYSU-FM is very happy to be a co-sponsor of this concert. The esteemed string quartet Cuarteto Latinoamericano has been around for a long time, and although they play the standard repertoire magnificently, they specialize in Latin-American composers, and that is what is especially exciting to me,” said WYSU-FM Director Gary Sexton. “Being able to hear live performances of string quartets by Leo Brouwer and Heitor Villa-Lobos, along with Shubert’s “Death and the Maiden Quartet,” is a rare and wonderful opportunity. Don’t miss it.”

Cuarteto Latinoamericano will also offer a free masterclass the day of the concert. It occurs at 1 p.m. in YSU’s Bliss Recital Hall. No registration is needed.
