The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County continues its food-education programming in March and April at the Culinary Literacy Center at Main Library. Classes cover a broad range of topics, including nutrition, food preparation, healthy eating, and how-to programs (baking, entertaining, and seasonal and ethnic cooking). (Canstock)

Classes cover a broad range of topics, including nutrition, food preparation, healthy eating, and how-to programs (baking, entertaining, and seasonal and ethnic cooking).

Culinary Foundations – The Budget-Friendly Potato. Learn how to prepare delicious potato dishes on a budget. For adults. Main Library, 5:30 p.m., Monday, March 6.

Culinary Foundations – Poultry Perfection. An instructor will teach how to spatchcock whole chicken for even roasting and make flavorful stocks and gravies. For adults. Main Library, noon, Saturday, March 11.

Chicken Pot Pie. Learn how to make this classic comfort food. This is a two-day program and you must register for both sessions. For adults. Session One: Main Library, noon, Tuesday, March 14. Session Two: Main Library, noon, Wednesday, March 15.

Stepping Out with Healthy Cooking. Plant-based curious? Mark National Nutrition Month with Jessica Romeo, community health educator from Mercy Health. Attendees will learn basic knife skills, receive a 6” chef knife to keep, and prepare a vegetarian meal. For adults. Main Library, 1 p.m., Friday, March 24. 

Wild Mushrooms: A World of Wonder at Our Feet. Explore the diversity of macro fungi with mycologist Walt Sturgeon. Distinctive edible and toxic species will be discussed including an overview on cooking, ecology, folklore, bioluminescent, hallucinogenic, and insectivorous species. For adults. Main Library, 1 p.m., Saturday, March 25. 

Bread Club – Chocolate Chip Hot Cross Buns. Learn a new twist on a traditional Easter favorite. This is a two-day class and you must register for both sessions. Participants will knead, shape, and bake a small batch of buns to take home. For adults. Session One: Main Library, 5:30 p.m., Monday, March 27. Session Two: Main Library, 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 28.

Culinary Foundations – All You Knead to Know About Bread. Learn the difference between quick breads and yeast breads followed by a demonstration and practice of making banana bread. You’ll also have the chance to knead a yeasted dough and then take home the completed project. Only register for one session. For adults. Main Library, noon, Thursday, April 6. Main Library, 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 12.

Bread Club – Pizza Dough. Learn about the different types of doughs for making pizza as well as tips for best dough results. You’ll knead your own dough by hand to take home. The program will conclude with a pizza tasting. For adults. Only register for one session. Main Library, noon, Thursday, April 13. Main Library, 5:30 p.m., Monday, April 17.

No Bake Cherry Cheese Pie. For adults. Bring a container to take home your pie. Only register for one session. Main Library, noon, Thursday, April 20. Main Library, 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 24.

Stepping Out with Healthy Cooking. Build a better protein bar with Jessica Romeo, community health educator at Mercy Health. Receive a baking pan to take home along with a container to store what you make. For adults. Main Library, 1 p.m., Friday, April 28.
