DeWine announces special election for Ohio’s 6th Congressional District

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced special election dates for the 6th Congressional District to fill the District’s upcoming vacancy.

The election schedule will include a partisan primary occurring on March 19, and the general election occurring on June 11.

Rep. Bill Johnson formally communicated with the governor his resignation effective Jan. 21, at the end of the day. Johnson was scheduled to begin his presidency at Youngstown State University on March 15, but will now start on Jan. 22, the day after his Congressional resignation takes effect.

The formal communication of the resignation permits DeWine to call the special election and issue a Writ of Election. According to the Ohio Revised Code, “the state shall pay all costs of any special election held under this section.”

Important dates related to the Special Election

  • Declaration of candidacies for partisan candidates must be filed with the Mahoning County Board of Elections by 4 p.m., Friday, Jan. 19.
  • The Mahoning County Board of Elections must certify the names of the candidates that will appear on the special primary ballot to Washington, Noble, Monroe, Belmont, Harrison, Jefferson, Carroll, Tuscarawas, Stark and Columbiana county boards of elections. Wednesday, Jan. 24.
  • The Special Election Congressional Primary takes place. Tuesday, March 19.
  • The Special Congressional General Election takes place. Tuesday, June 11.
