From YoCo to Youngstown University – The 1940s and ’50s. This set captures college life from the onset of World War II to the late 1950s. During this time, Youngstown College continued to grow, but a 1949 bird’s eye view of campus (below) shows emerging conflicts between space and access. The former homes of Youngstown’s elite still served as classrooms, but automobile culture was beginning to change the character of Wick Avenue. A large parking lot is seen across from Jones Hall and there’s even a gas station. The campus’ changing character is also evidenced in new construction. During this time, four barracks-style buildings were added to the campus. Academic life also evolved. Students – in their clothing and interests – reflected the styles of the day. But some things remained constant: Jones Hall continued to serve as the academic and cultural heart of campus. It appears in everything from formal graduation ceremonies to a staged photo of YoCo students with President Howard Jones.
