Ham radio operators from the Mahoning Valley Amateur Radio Association will spend 24 hours demonstrating how amateur radio responds to public communications needs during emergencies.
The public event occurs June 22-23 at the Mill Creek MetroParks Farm, 7574 Columbiana-Canfield Road, Canfield 44406. The demonstration takes place from 2 p.m. Saturday until 2 p.m. Sunday.
Ham operators will set up multiple stations and operate on power supplied from stand-alone generators, batteries and solar power. This emergency-preparedness exercise, called Field Day, is organized by the American Radio Relay League.
Field Day occurs annually in the United States and Canada and allows ham radio operators to test and improve their emergency communications skills.
During this event, stations quickly assemble computer systems, antennas and power distribution to make contact with thousands of other stations nationwide. Transmissions are completely independent of domestic power and support.
Stations utilize many forms of communications, from voice and Morse code to the latest digital transmission systems and satellite communications. The ARRL estimates that more than 40,000 hams will participate in Field Day this year.
The Mahoning Valley Amateur Radio Association was founded in 1919 and is one of the oldest amateur radio clubs in the world. For more information, visit here.
