Hungarian Cookies Nut Crescents was “Recipe for the Day” on Marjorie Mariner’s “Kitchen Corner.” The show’s guest was Margaret Hertok. Undated. Submitted by Elizabeth Glasgow. INGREDIENTS

2 cups flour
½ cup sugar
½ pound butter
½ pound ground nuts (walnuts)
1 teaspoon vanilla

PREPARATION 

  1. Cream sugar and butter.
  2. Add flour slowly.
  3. Add nuts and vanilla.
  4. Roll out on floured board and cut into 2-inch squares.
  5. Roll from the corner down and make into a crescent form.
  6. Bake for 15 minutes in a 400°F oven.
  7. Roll in powdered sugar.

Hungarian nut crescents are a traditional Eastern European cookie baked for the Christmas holiday and celebratory events like weddings. A traditional preparation utilizes ground walnuts, but other varieties use apricot, poppyseed and prune lekvar filling.
