Ideastream director to speak on creating public media newsroom

Mike McIntyre, executive editor of Ideastream Public Media, will address a Feb. 15 luncheon gathering of the Youngstown Press Club.

The event will begin at noon at the Concept Studio, 217 W. Federal St. McIntyre’s topic will be: “Building a regional public media newsroom.”

Cleveland-based Ideastream is the home of member-supported public broadcast stations WVIZ-TV and WKSU and WCLV radio.

During his 30 years at The Plain Dealer, McIntyre was a reporter, feature writer, Sunday magazine staffer and metro columnist. There, he also wrote about stand-up comedy for the Friday! magazine.

From 2010 to 2020, he was the host of the “Sound of Ideas” daily public affairs talk show on WKSU.

McIntyre became executive editor in 2020, and he continues as host of the Friday “Sound of Ideas Reporters’ Roundtable” on WKSU and “Ideas” on WVIZ.

A graduate of Bowling Green State University, he received the Herb Caen Memorial Award of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists in 2010.

In 2016, McIntyre was inducted into the Press Club of Cleveland’s Journalism Hall of Fame.

The club was re-established in 2018 to promote journalism and other communication- related professions in the Mahoning Valley.
