Kayla Gilmore to perform in McDonough recital series | Gilmore’s repertoire includes music from Henri Busser and Paul Hindemith. She will also perform François Borne’s “Carmen” fantasy.


Flutist Kayla Gilmore will perform a virtual recital for the final McDonough Museum Honors Recital Series. It premieres 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 12 on the McDonough Museum of Art and Cliffe College YouTube channels.

The series is a collaboration between the McDonough Museum of Art and the Dana School of Music where six students were selected as winners in the competition this semester.

Pianist Diane Yazvac will accompany Gilmore. Her repertoire includes music from Henri Busser and Paul Hindemith. She will also perform François Borne’s “Carmen” fantasy.

Gilmore is a third-year student at Youngstown State University studying flute performance. She is the principal flute in the YSU Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra, and has played in flute ensemble, pep band, marching band, and the Whirlwinds Woodwind Quintet.

She is a winner of the American Protégé Woodwinds and Brass Competition, the Tuesday Musical Club Scholarship, the Carol E. Austin performing arts award, the Fitzjohn Memorial Scholarship, the Masterworks Festival Honors Recital Competition, and the Three Rivers Young Peoples Orchestra Concerto Competition.

Her teachers include Dr. Kathryn Umble, Michael Maizels, Rhian Kenny, and Dr. Gail Looney. Gilmore has performed in master classes for Lorna McGhee, Jonathan Keeble, Alexa Still, David Gier and Katie Schott-Schafer.

She has attended the ARIA International Summer Academy, the Consummate Flutist Summer Masterclass Series, and the Masterworks Chamber Music Festival. In addition, she is the vice president of the YSU Flute Society and the flute coach for the Youngstown Symphony Youth Orchestra.
