The Mahoning Valley Scrappers are announcing their 2024 coaching staff.
Joining Scrappers manager Quinten McCracken for the 2024 season are former Major League Baseball relief pitcher Ron Mahay, former MLB catcher Mike DiFelice and Cleveland Guardians 2017 second round pick outfielder Quentin Holmes.
The Scrappers will open the 2024 season at Eastwood Field on Friday, June 7 against the Frederick Keys.
Mahay will serve as pitching coach. During his 14-year MLB career, he played 514 games and pitched 568 innings with a win-loss record of 27-12 and an ERA of 3.83. He recorded 470 strikeouts while allowing 266 walks.
Mahay made his Major League debut in 1997 with the Boston Red Sox, followed by the Oakland Athletics (1999-2000), Florida Marlins (2000), Chicago Cubs (2001-2002), Texas Rangers (2003-2007), Atlanta Braves (2007), Kansas City Royals (2008-2009), and the Minnesota Twins (2009-2010). Mahay also spent time coaching in the Mahoning Valley during the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
DiFelice joins the Scrappers as hitting coach. He played in 550 career games, had 1,558 MLB at-bats and a career .236 batting average, with 368 hits and 167 RBIs.
DiFelice made his Major League debut in 1996 with the St. Louis Cardinals, followed by the Tampa Bay Rays (1998-2001), Arizona Diamondbacks (2001), St. Louis Cardinals (2002), Kansas City Royals (2003), Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs (2004), New York Mets (2005-2007), and the Tampa Bay Rays in 2008. DiFelice also was McCracken’s teammate in 1998.
Holmes will serve as assistant coach. He was drafted as an outfielder 64th overall (2nd round) to the Cleveland Guardians during the 2017 MLB draft and spent 2017-2022 in the organization. In the MiLB, he recorded 161 hits, 63 RBIs, 27 doubles and 50 stolen bases.
The Mahoning Valley Scrappers are one of six founding member teams in the MLB Draft League. The other teams are Frederick Keys, State College Spikes, Trenton Thunder, West Virginia Black Bears and Williamsport Crosscutters.
