GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Meijer will officially open its new Boardman supercenter Thursday morning, bringing a new, state-of-the-art retail experience to customers in the Mahoning Valley.

Meijer will open two new supercenters in Northeast Ohio tomorrow. The 155,000 square-foot store in Boardman will be the Michigan retailer’s first location in the Youngstown area, while a second store in Seven Hills is the latest of seven stores opened in the region since 2019.

“These new stores reinforce our ongoing commitment to serving the needs of communities at a time when everyone is looking for a one-stop shopping experience,” said Meijer President and CEO Rick Keyes.

“We look forward to providing a customer-focused store that offers fresh options and innovations to help reshape how customers shop for the groceries and items they need while keeping their families safe.”

The new Meijer stores will offer more than 600 varieties of fresh produce, 150 USD-certified organic items, a full-service meat department, a full-service bakery, and a pharmacy. General merchandise items include apparel for men, women, children and babies, health and beauty items, and a pet department with 200 pet toys, 500 varieties of treats for dogs and cats and premium foods.

The new stores feature various digital shopping features. Shop & Scan allows customers to scan barcodes via a mobile app and bag items while they shop. Meijer Home Delivery and Pickup offers home delivery ($9.95 per order) and curbside pickup (free with orders of $35 or more).

Meijer officially opened its first Mahoning Valley supercenter on Thursday, May 13. The new store is located at 1400 Boardman-Canfield Road in Boardman. The footage for the video is courtesy of Joe Hirschmugl, corporate communications manager for Meijer.

COVID-19 safety measures – The new stores are currently operating under adjusted hours and maintain coronavirus safety measures. Inside stores, safety decals are visible on the floor where customers typically gather, and protective plexiglass shields are at every checkout station. To help ensure the continued health and safety of its employees and customers, Meijer continues to require face coverings by anyone entering a Meijer store or Meijer Express station at all locations, except where medical conditions prevent them from wearing one.

Since opening its first northeast Ohio stores in 2019, Meijer has supported numerous organizations in the greater-Cleveland communities where its stores are located. Additionally, Meijer has supported the Cleveland Clinic in launching mobile health units while also becoming a partner with both the Cleveland Browns and the Cleveland Indians.

Charitable giving – Prior to opening the doors at its new Supercenters in Seven Hills and Boardman, each of the stores demonstrated support in their respective communities last week by making a total of more than $25,000 in donations to local organizations. The Boardman store made donations to Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley, the Youngstown Chapter of Inspiring Minds and the Mahoning Valley Second Harvest Food Bank. The Seven Hills location made donations to the Cleveland American Veterans Association, All Faiths Food Pantry and the City of Seven Hills.

Meijer donates more than 6 percent of its net profit to charitable organizations annually, and each of its stores work with local food banks and pantries to help fight hunger. Since 2008, the retailer’s “Simply Give” program has generated more than $62 million for its food pantry partners throughout the Midwest.

“Throughout the past few months, our Meijer team members have worked diligently to prepare these new stores amid unprecedented challenges, and for that we are all proud and inspired,” Keyes said. “We are looking forward to providing the important items our customers need in the cleanest shopping environment as we work together in the new communities that have welcomed us.”
