The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is announcing its schedule for the 2020 holiday season. Due to the cancellation of this year’s “Memories of Christmas Past” exhibit, MVHS has scheduled online programming and alternative in-person events at the Tyler History Center.

MVHS will admit visitors at the Tyler History Center for exhibits, displays, and a pop-up yuletide shopping experience, in addition to its permanent gift shop. MVHS is also creating holiday-themed versions of its many online programs through its website and social-media platforms. Premier Bank is underwriting MVHS’ holiday programming.

MVHS’ current health and safety protocols will continue in place, requiring room occupancy limits, 6-foot distancing and wearing of masks by all staff and visitors. MVHS will adjust to any updated guidelines or restrictions set by Gov. Mike DeWine and Ohio’s Department of Health Development Services Agency. Look for updates at the MVHS website and Facebook page.

In-person plans for the holiday season include:

The Tyler Holiday Store – New and vintage holiday merchandise will be available for purchase. The Tyler Holiday Store will be located in the Thomas Ballroom on the second floor of Tyler History Center. The permanent gift shop on the first floor will sell non-holiday merchandise, including new books and apparel that connect with Mahoning Valley history.  Noon-4 p.m., Fridays through Sundays, Nov. 27-Dec. 20. Final bonus shopping days will be noon-4 p.m., Monday-Wednesday, Dec. 21-23.

Heirlooms: Making the Season Bright – Holiday artifacts from the MVHS collection will be featured in the Tyler’s Youngstown Foundation Community History Gallery. Open Friday, Nov. 6 through Sunday, Jan. 3, 2021.

2020 Holiday Windows – Images of vintage Mahoning Valley holiday scenes will be free to view by all passers-by and visitors. On display throughout the yuletide season at the front entrance to Tyler History Center.

Virtual and online programming include:

Holiday Mahoning Valley artiFACTS – Features seasonal collection items in a special version of the MVHS Facebook series. Mondays and Wednesdays, Nov. 9 through Dec. 30.

Holiday Bites and Bits of History – “The Art of the Glassblower” by author and Christmas antiques collector, George W. Johnson, will feature the mastery of glassblowing in holiday décor. It debuts on the MVHS YouTube channel at noon on Thursday, Nov. 19. Cassie Nespor, curator at YSU Melnick Medical Museum, will explore the medical roots of celebratory cocktails in “Cheers to Your Health!” It debuts on the MVHS YouTube channel at noon on Thursday, Dec. 17.

Holiday Hands On History – At-home activities can be downloaded from the MVHS website. Example images and step-by-step instructions for each of these craft projects will be added every Sunday from Nov. 22 through Jan. 3.

Holiday Vintage Video Series – The Business & Media Archives of the Mahoning Valley will post a selection of holiday film footage from its collection on its Facebook page and the MVHS YouTube channel. Programs will premiere on Tuesdays and Saturdays from Nov. 24 through Jan. 2.

Holiday Time Capsules – Blog series on MVHS’ website will dive into various holiday traditions and events that occur at the time of the winter solstice. These will premiere on Fridays from Nov. 27 through Jan. 3.

The Tyler Center will be closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. Both the Arms Family Museum and Tyler History Center locations will reopen to the public on Friday, Jan. 15.
