MVHS program explores career of Youngstown’s first detective | Curator of Education Traci Manning will lead the free program as part of MVHS’ Bites and Bits of History lunchtime program.
Mahoning Valley Historical Society will present “George B. Moyer: Youngstown’s First Detective” at noon on Thursday, Nov. 17 in the Thomas Ballroom at the Tyler History Center, 325 W. Federal St., Youngstown.
Curator of Education Traci Manning will lead the free program as part of MVHS’ Bites and Bits of History lunchtime program.
In 1895, Moyer was appointed the first detective in the Youngstown Police Department, a position he served with distinction. He worked in the Youngstown Police Department for 35 years and retired around 1915. Through the use of original police registers, the presentation will explore the early history of YPD, several landmark crimes, and Moyer’s legacy.
Manning holds a bachelor’s degree in religion from Gettysburg College, a master’s in applied history from Shippensburg University, and studied secondary social studies education at Wilson College. She spent six years working for the National Park Service in various parks as an education park ranger before coming to MVHS in 2012. She oversees outreach and educational programming for students, adults, and the general public.
Bites and Bits of History lunchtime programs are presented by the John and Loretta Hynes Foundation.
