National Ice Cream Day: July 21, 2024 | Youngstown confectioner Harry Burt Jr. invented the ice cream bar and truck in 1920.
In its history of the Good Humor ice cream company, the Mahoning Valley Historical Society stated that Burt obtained the patent to produce the Good Humor ice cream bar and production process on Oct. 9, 1923.
The accompanying photo album shows the Good Humor ice cream truck at various U.S. locations in the mid-20th century. All photographs are public-domain images from the Library of Congress.
