National political reporter to discuss election coverage challenges

A national political reporter will highlight the challenges journalists face as they cover 21st-century elections when he addresses a May 23 Youngstown Press Club gathering.

Mark Niquette (Bloomberg)

“An insider’s look at covering elections” will be the topic of Mark Niquette of Bloomberg News at the event, which will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the V2 Wine Bar and Trattoria, 100 W. Federal St., Youngstown.

Niquette has been covering politics and government on the local, state and national levels for more than 30 years.

He got his start at The Vindicator, where he worked for 10 years before moving on to The Akron Beacon Journal and The Columbus Dispatch. He has been at Bloomberg News since 2011.

Niquette has covered every Democratic and Republican national convention since 2008. He was on the presidential campaign trail with Hillary Clinton in 2016 and covered former President Donald Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign.

From now through November, he expects to spend much of his time focused on the battleground states, especially Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.

He and his wife, Lisa, reside in Columbus.

Topics for the conversation with Niquette include current and future trends that are transforming political campaigns, including changes in technology and advertising and the impact of social media and artificial intelligence.

Also up for discussion are the evolution of polling, challenges to election integrity and how to cover campaigns that have gone beyond hyperbole to fundamental disagreement about objective reality.

The required pre-registration form is at youngstownpressclub.com…, and the registration deadline is May 19. The fee is $20 for Youngstown Press Club members and $25 for non-members.

Happy hour snacks will be provided and drinks may be purchased at the V2 bar. The event is part of Youngstown Press Club’s Edward M. Barr Foundation Speaker Series.

A portion of the proceeds from all YPC events will go to the club’s college scholarship fund.

The press club was re-established in 2018 to promote journalism and related professions in the Mahoning Valley.
