New Music Guild to present concert Sunday at Sts. Peter and Paul

The New Music Guild, Inc. will present its annual Winter Concert this Sunday at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 421 Covingston St., Youngstown. The free concert will occur from 3-6 p.m.

The concert will feature Argentinean cellist Silvia Games DuBos and Pittsburgh-based pianist/composer Helga Scheibert in a program featuring classical and modern works.

The concert opens with performances by New Music Guild coordinators Gwyneth Rollin, violin, and Dr. Robert Rollin, piano. Selections include “Welsh Song,” “David of the White Rock,” and “Passover Songs.” Robert Rollin will perform “Recollections of Sally,” his memorial composition honoring close friend Sally Maloy Dolovy, a talented violinist and choral director, followed by “Night Thoughts I.”

Gains DuBos and Scheibert will perform Carlos Guastavino’s “La Rosa y El Sauce” and Victor Simon’s “Inattendu,” both mainstays of the Argentinian repertoire, followed by Rollin’s Spiritual Images,” the first movement of Beethoven’s “Sonata No. 3,” and Rollin’s “Two Corridos.”

As soloist, Du Bos will perform part of Bach’s “Cello Suite,” the world premiere of Rollin’s “In Memory of Wayne,” for his good friend trombonist Wayne Kankovsky, and his “Memorial Melodies” and “Remembering Sally.” Scheibert will perform her composition, “Magic in the Forrest.”

DuBos has performed nationally and internationally. She is principal cellist for the Washington and Greenville symphonies (Pennsylvania) and performs in the cello section of the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra. She has a master’s degree in performance from Duquesne University, and has lived in the United States since 2006. She teaches the strings program at SMARTS, and maintains private studios in Pittsburgh and Youngstown.

Dr. Helga Scheibert is an active composer with special interests in classical, jazz, and contemporary music. Since 2020, she has released two albums of her own works. She was born in Transylvania and completed her bachelor’s in Romania. She earned an artist diploma and master’s from Duquesne University and a piano performance doctorate at West Virginia University. Scheibert has performed on Romanian National and West Virginia Public Radio, and is winner of numerous competitions.

An after party (with refreshments) will take place at the church basement fellowship hall immediately following the concert.
