Newswanger Meats of Shiloh, Ohio is announcing a voluntary recall of approximately 2,190 pounds of fresh not frozen beef, pork, chicken, and sliced deli products that were possibly produced under insanitary conditions. Newswanger Meats has determined that these products were produced with the use of a water supply that failed to meet the Ohio Department of Health’s requirements in the Ohio Administrative Code for an approved private water system.
The products subject to recall include:
• 10 lbs. Fresh Beef Stew Meat
• 10 lbs. Fresh Beef Cubed Steaks
• 3 lbs. Fresh Beef Strip Steaks
• 75 lbs. Fresh Ground Beef
• 5 lbs. Fresh Bratwurst
• 5 lbs. Fresh Breakfast Sausage Links
• 3 lbs. Fresh Maple Flavored Sausage Links
– 3 lbs. Fresh Italian Sausage Links
• 20 lbs. Fresh Pork Chops
• 10 lbs. Fresh Pork Steaks
• 8 lbs. Fresh Pork Roasts
• 1,440 lbs. Fresh Chorizo Sausage in 1 lb. packages
• 3 Rind-on-carcass hogs
• 13 lbs. Chicken (leg quarters, drumsticks, boneless breast and thighs)
• Various sliced deli meats.
The fresh beef, pork, chicken and deli products were produced on Oct. 4, Oct. 5 and Oct. 6, 2017. The products bear the establishment number EST. 151 inside the Ohio mark of inspection. Just above the mark of inspection there is a lot code of 17J04, 17J05, 17J06 and OCT0517. The hog carcasses were sold to Ohio City Provisions in Cleveland, Ohio and the Chorizo Sausage was sold to Fresh Fork Market in Cleveland, Ohio. The remaining products were sold through the retail store at Newswanger Meats.
The problem was discovered by Newswanger Meats and the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) Division of Meat Inspection through notification on Oct. 6, 2017. Newswanger Meats and ODA inspection personnel observed results from a water sample collected by Richland Public Health on Oct. 4, 2017. The sample was analyzed at a laboratory indicating a positive total coliform bacteria count without a level quantified. The sample was negative for E.coli, however the presence of other coliform bacteria in the water violates the regulatory requirement and the supply is determined to be non-potable. Therefore, the non-potable water supply resulted in the potential creation of insanitary conditions and potential direct product contamination leading to adulteration of the products processed in the facility during this time period.
ODA and the company have received no reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.
As a precaution, Newswanger Meats urges customers that have purchased these products not to consume them. These products should be discarded or returned to the place of purchase for a full refund.
