DeWine announces effort to assist veteran-serving organizations

The Ohio Department of Commerce is joining hundreds of organizations across the country that have partnered with the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, in participating in International Fraud Awareness Week, Nov. 17-23.

Fraud Week, as it is commonly known, champions the need to proactively fight fraud and help safeguard businesses from the growing problem. The Department encourages Ohio business leaders and employees to take steps to minimize the impact of fraud by promoting awareness and creating opportunities to better educate the people they work with every day.

According to the Federal Trade Commission’s 2018 Consumer Sentinel Network Data Book, the state of Ohio reported more than 73,000 fraud cases last year, costing Ohioans more than $27 million.

“It’s the Department’s daily mission to protect Ohioans from losing their money through scams and fraud,” said Ohio Department of Commerce Director Sheryl Maxfield.

Additionally, the Ohio Department of Commerce offers resources to help protect Ohioans:

• If you suspect someone may be a victim of investment fraud, call the Division of Securities’ Investor Protection Hotline at 877-683-7841.

• If you need assistance filing a complaint against a state-chartered bank, credit union, or consumer finance company, call the Division of Financial Institutions’ Office of Consumer Affairs at 866-278-0003.

• If you suspect unlicensed real estate activity, call the Division of Real Estate at 614-466-4100.
