Oct. 12: Youngstown Press Club, YSU to host debate with 13th District candidates

Three candidates vying to represent the 13th Congressional District will debate on Monday, Oct. 12 in an election event co-hosted by the Youngstown Press Club, Akron Press Club and the Youngstown State University Department of Communication.

The event will be broadcast live from 7-8 p.m. on WFMJ-TV.

Candidates include Tim Ryan, the Democratic incumbent; Christina Hagan, the Republican candidate; and Dr. Michael Fricke, the Libertarian candidate.

Dr. Adam Earnheardt, YSU, will moderate the event. Five panelists will present questions to the candidates. They include Derek Steyer, WFMJ-TV; David Skolnick, Tribune Chronicle/The Vindicator; George Nelson, The Business Journal; and two from the Akron Press Club.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this is not a public event. Media access will be limited.

Ryan has been the U.S. Representative for Ohio’s 13th Congressional District since 2013. He entered Congress in 2003 representing Ohio’s 17th Congressional District until redistricting.

Hagan formerly served in the Ohio House of Representative for the 50th District from 2011 to 2018.

Fricke is a chemist and spent much of his life in the pharmaceutical industry.

The Youngstown Press Club was re-established in 2018 to promote journalism and other communication-related professions in the Mahoning Valley. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit affiliated with Youngstown State University, the Youngstown Press Club operates exclusively for educational, charitable and social purposes.
