The Ohio State Bar Association on Wednesday recognized three area attorneys for 50 years of service to the community and the legal profession.
Attys. Frederic E. Naragon, Carl A. Nunziato and Ted Thornton were recognized as part of the OSBA’s District 13 annual meeting at the Salem Golf Club.
OSBA District 13 includes nearly 400 attorneys who practice in Columbiana and Mahoning counties.
The honorees include:
Frederic E. Naragon of Salem is a solo practitioner. He opened his private practice in 1975, after working with the firm of Fitch & Kendall. Naragon worked for and then led the Public Defender’s Office in Columbiana County and, upon its closure, established the Criminal Defense Company, which provided for public defense in the county for 19 years. He has also worked as an assistant professor, teaching business law at Kent State University for more than 20 years. Naragon has served on the boards of the Salem Community Foundation and the Grandview Cemetery Association and is a founding member of the Burchfield Homestead Society where he now serves as secretary and treasurer. He received his law degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Law.
NUNZIATOCarl A. Nunziato of Youngstown is an attorney and worked for 30 years for Dollar Savings and Trust Co. He has also worked at Ohio Bancorp and National City Bank. Nunziato served as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, and in 1966, was struck by an enemy mortar. For his service, Nunziato has received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with three Battle Stars and Aircraft Crew Gunner Wings. He has dedicated much of his community work to eliminating barriers for veterans and Americans with disabilities. He is the co-founder of the Youngstown chapter of the Governor’s Subcommittee for Barrier Free Architecture and established the Carl Nunziato Scholarship that provides tuition or room and board assistance for eligible ROTC cadets. He has served on the board of the Youngstown State University Foundation since 2008. In December 2020, the U.S. Senate passed legislation to re-name the Department of Veterans Affairs community-based outpatient clinic in Youngstown after Nunziato. He earned his law degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Law.
Ted Thornton of Youngstown is a shareholder with the firm of Manchester, Newman & Bennett where he focuses his practice in the areas of business and labor and employment law. He is a member of the OSBA Labor and Employment Law Section as well as a member of the Mahoning County Bar Association and has served as general counsel for the Youngstown Country Club as well as the Youngstown State University Foundation. Thornton has served on the board of Catholic Charities Regional Agency, Maria Residential Housing and the Boardman Rotary. He also served as a captain in the U.S. Army. Thornton received his law degree from the University of Cincinnati School of Law.
