Penn State Extension will offer the first in a series of ServSafe Food Safety Manager certification courses beginning in January. The fee is $185 and covers the ServSafe Manager book, exam, answer sheet and learning materials.
The first sessions occur 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 23 and 9 a.m.-noon, Thursday, Jan. 30 at Penn State’s Venango County extension office, 867 Mercer Road in Franklin, Pa. Additional certification courses are scheduled for March in Mercer, Lawrence and Butler counties.
In-person training will be taught by certified ServSafe instructors. Participants will learn how to prevent food contamination by properly receiving, storing, preparing, cooking, cooling and serving the food, as well as learning the proper methods of sanitizing food service facilities.
The ServSafe® Food Safety Program is for managers or those in a supervisory role requiring certification. Upon successful completion, participants will receive the ServSafe® Food Protection Manager Certificate. Training meets the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture requirements for the Food Employee Certification Act. The certification is good for five years.

About the course: The ServSafe® Food Safety Manager Course, conducted by Penn State Extension, is for individuals preparing for the food protection certification exam. Completing the ServSafe® Manager Course and passing the ServSafe® Food Protection Manager Certification Examination with a 75 percent or higher meets this requirement.
