Premier Bank has joined the American Bankers Association and banks across the nation to promote #BanksNeverAskThat, an industry-wide campaign educating consumers about the persistent threat of phishing scams.
The initiative is part of a coordinated, industry-wide campaign to protect consumers during National Cybersecurity Awareness Month.
The Federal Trade Commission estimates that consumers lost $8.8 billion to phishing and other fraud in 2022, an increase of more than 65 percent compared to 2021.
“Education and awareness are key to helping our clients spot a scam,” said Tina Shaver, executive vice president, Chief Risk Officer. “Here at Premier Bank, we invest in state-of-the-art systems, services and processes that protect our clients’ personal and financial information. We want to be a resource for education for our clients and through the #BanksNeverAskThat campaign, we are able to provide resources on how to recognize and avoid phishing scams so clients can stay one step ahead of the scammers.”
To combat phishing, the #BanksNeverAskThat campaign uses attention- grabbing humor and other engaging content to empower consumers to identify bogus bank communications asking for sensitive information like their passwords and social security numbers.
“By impersonating a bank, a scammer can steal thousands of dollars with just one text message, phone call or email,” said Paul Benda, senior vice president, Operational Risk and Cybersecurity, American Bankers Association.
“With the strong support of participating banks like Premier Bank, the #BanksNeverAskThat campaign seeks to turn the tables by arming consumers with the information they need to outsmart the scammers and protect their money.”
Premier, along with banks from across the United States and ABA, are kicking off this year’s campaign to mark the beginning of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month.
Throughout the month of October, Premier Bank will share questions, videos and consumer tips on social media designed to highlight the most common phishing schemes. Because cybersecurity education and fraud awareness can often be dull and forgettable to many consumers, the campaign is designed to be bright and bold with a bit of comedy.
