The YMCA of Youngstown and the Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority brought challenging sports and games to East Side youth in a special summer camp.

The program, which began July 28, served 30 youth, ages 5 to 13, at the newly established Envision Center Summer Camp at Rockford Village.

The camp engaged youth through fit and fun activities as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization.

Staff from the YMCA transformed several popular fitness classes such as 12 Rounds and Jump Stretch into physical activities for youth. Youth participated in challenging sports and games, all designed to get their heart rate going while having fun.

The program was coordinated and facilitated through a partnership with the Finer Things Academy, Inc. in conjunction with the Center for Community Empowerment, nonprofit organizations that work with the Rockford Neighborhood Promise Initiative.

“Understanding the limitation and challenges amid the pandemic and its impact on the youth, we thought it to be of great importance for us to promote healthy physical activity and decided to make it our goal to reach out and serve our city’s youth by bringing the YMCA to them,” said Shawn Armstrong, Central Branch executive director.

“It was fun, healthy, and educational for our children and we hope to continue providing this camp in the upcoming years,” said Sandra Kellar, Rockford Village property manager.
