Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership (TNP) and the Central State University Extension are announcing the kickoff of the Beginner Farmer Training Program. The launch will occur 5 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 22 at BRITE Energy Innovators, 125 W. Market St., Warren 44481.

A $32,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture will fund the three-year program. The grant will create hands-on apprenticeships for growing and marketing fresh food, develop successful commercial startups, and help farmers improve and/or diversify existing enterprises. It will also help minorities and veterans develop commercial farms.

“The program represents another tool in the fight for both equitable healthy food access and economic development in the communities most affected by food insecurity and disinvestment. We are proud to be a partner on this exciting opportunity,” said Matt Martin, executive director, Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership.

Central State will provide educational workshops, apprenticeships, access to USDA loans and grants, and assistance with marketing and business planning. The extension will also offer agricultural supplies and small farming equipment. The Ohio State University Extension – Trumbull County will assist Central State as a formal partner.

TNP will provide a training site, water access and recruitment. The Warren nonprofit will connect farmers to local markets, restaurants, land leases and property for sale.

Since 2010, TNP has worked to mitigate the impact of food deserts in Warren and Trumbull County through its Garden Resources of Warren program (GROW), Warren Farmers Market and other related initiatives. TNP’s Warren Community Food Security Strategic Plan from 2017 identified impediments to healthy food access and emphasized the need for a multi-faceted approach to working within the local food system.
