The Trumbull County Tourism Bureau is announcing the launch of its 2020 Italian Food Trail Passport Program. The effort is designed to help visitors and residents experience the area’s Italian food heritage through visits to participating Food Trail locations.

“We are thrilled about this year’s passport, which has 17 stops, including four restaurants that are new to the program,” said Beth Kane, marketing manager of the Trumbull County Tourism Bureau. “We’re kicking it off with a 2020 Italian Food Trail Restaurant Week.” During the week of March 9, the public can pick up passports at any participating location.

Participants for 2020 include the Buena Vista Café, Café 422, Country Porch Winery, Enzo’s Restaurant, Giorgio’s Ristorante, Greene Eagle Winery, Jimmy’s Italian Specialties, Just Pizzelles, Leo’s Ristorante, Margherita’s Grille, Niki’z Pub, Red Plum Pizza & Pasta, Salvatore’s Italian Grill, Station Square Restaurant, Sunrise Inn, Vasilio’s Restaurant & Pizzeria, and Wedgewood Fernando’s Pizza.

Passports are free and available at participating restaurants, the Trumbull County Tourism office, or online at Italian Food Trail.

“We’re excited to showcase the rich Italian culture we have in our area to a wider audience through the Trail and the Passport Program,” said Kane. “People traveling to Passport stops will find a range of food options – from wine varietals and warm, cozy dinners, to a quick bite at a pizzeria.”

As the Tourism Bureau notes, some of the Valley’s most memorable Italian dishes didn’t start in restaurants, but were rooted in the traditions of the families who settled in the region during previous industrial booms. The legacy of these Italian families left a powerful presence in Trumbull County and is evidenced in their culinary contributions. Unique dishes include Italian greens (with escarole with a Hungarian hot pepper); chicken Française; white pizza; hot peppers in oil; Italian wedding soup, and others.

When participants purchase an appetizer, entrée or dessert, their Passport will receive a stamp from that site. Those who receive all 17 stamps, can submit their completed passport back to the Trumbull County Tourism Bureau and will have 17 chances to win one of the $50 gift certificates from participating sites.

As an additional incentive, the first 100 people to collect nine stamps and return their passport to the office, will receive an Italian Food Trail baseball cap. Details are included in the passport information.
