The Mahoning Valley Historical Society will mark National Ice Cream Day with an open house on Sunday, July 17 at Tyler History Center in Youngstown. The event occurs from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free.

To celebrate the national observance, Good Humor is headed back to its Youngstown roots and will bring classic frozen treats to the party.

“Good Humor frozen treats are the perfect way to celebrate National Ice Cream Day this year at Mahoning Valley Historical Society,” note organizers.

In addition, MHVS will mark the centennial of Klondike-brand products, which originated from the Youngstown-based Isaly’s. Klondikes will also be available during the event.

Good Humor and Klondike are owned by Unilever. For more information, visit www.unileverusa.com….

During the open house, visitors are welcome to explore the building that was once home to Burt’s, the retail and manufacturing landmark of local confectioner Harry Burt. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of Burt’s Grand Confectionary at 325 W. Federal St., and new informational exhibit panels throughout the building tell its story.

The day will feature hands-on fun with arts and crafts activities, ice-cream making and the chance to step into historic images through museum technology.

MVHS’s next History-To-Go event, “Harry Burt’s Youngstown, A Walking Tour,” will complement the open house. The program will highlight what Youngstown was like in 1922 as Burt’s opened to the public.

Visitors interested in joining the tour can sign up for tour times that start every half hour from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. during the open house. Visitors should expect each tour time to last 90 minutes. Full event details can be found on the MVHS website at mahoninghistory.org….

Visitors also can see the permanent exhibit in the Fok Gallery, and the new “Cultural Connections: German-Americans in the Mahoning Valley” exhibit in the Youngstown Foundation Community History Gallery. Guests may view the reading room in the Archives Resource Center, which contains many kinds of historical resource documents.

The Arms Family Museum and Stewart Media Archives Center will be closed to the public during the open house, in coordination with the National Ice Cream Day celebration.
