United Way sets Nov. 5 deadline for nonprofit letters of intent
Funding is available to nonprofits delivering education and emergency services in Mahoning County and in Girard, Liberty and Hubbard in Trumbull County. The United Way is collaborating with partners to educate and empower children and families in the Mahoning Valley.

Nonprofit organizations applying for funding through the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley have until Friday, Nov. 5 to submit their letter of intent (LOI).

Funding is available to nonprofits delivering education and emergency services in Mahoning County and in Girard, Liberty and Hubbard in Trumbull County. The United Way is collaborating with partners to educate and empower children and families in the Mahoning Valley.

“By engaging our community partners on focused impact areas, we are striving to create powerful collaborations to address our Valley’s most critical issues while providing comprehensive services for those in need,” said Bob Hannon, president of United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley. “We look forward to receiving program proposals that establish strategies that meet the needs of our community in the areas of Education and Emergency Services.”

Nonprofit organizations seeking to apply for funding through United Way should visit here for planning documents that outline the focus areas and strategies.

Agencies with programs not currently receiving funding that wish to apply must submit a letter of intent. The LOI must be submitted no later than Nov. 5, 2021 via E-C Impact that you can access here. Programs currently funded by the United Way are not required to submit a letter of intent.

The letter of intent must not exceed two pages and should include:

  • Agency contact information.
  • Organization description.
  • Statement of need.
  • Proposed program.
  • Other funding sources.

For all accepted new agencies and current partner agencies, grant applications will be open via E-C Impact, an online system, on Nov. 15, 2021 and will close on Jan. 28, 2022. Applications will not be accepted after the deadline.

Organizations must meet the following eligibility guidelines and have available for review:

  • Diversity, equity and inclusion policy/non-discrimination policies.
  • Directors and officers insurance.
  • Liability insurance.
  • Organization’s most-recent 990.
  • Organization’s most-recent audit or financial report.
  • Organization’s 501(c)3 IRS confirmation letter.

In addition, organizations must be able to document that the agency:

  • Is governed by a voluntary board of directors consisting of members from the general community.
  • Has been in business for at least 2 years.
  • Is committing some of its own resources to the program.
  • Has an outcome measurement system.
  • Will conduct a workplace campaign to benefit United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley.

Currently, 37 partner agencies receive funding for over 50 health- and human-service programs and initiatives. In addition to its funded-partner agencies, the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley provides initiatives such as “Success By 6,” which seeks to prepare children for kindergarten; “Success After 6,” which provides wraparound services to children in need in Youngstown; the “Imagination Library,” which provides free books each month to children (birth to age 5) in Mahoning County; “Financial Stability Partnership” and other work around children’s health services and financial literacy. Funding that supports the general well-being of the Mahoning Valley (emergency services) includes programs to support those in need of disaster or emergency services, shelter/domestic violence, food, housing and social services.
