The Cleveland-based Cavani String Quartet is named for 19th century violin makers Giovanni and Vincenzo Cavani. The quartet, which formed in 1984, became the Quartet-in-Residence at the Cleveland Institute of Music in 1988. Cavani has received The Naumburg Award, Ohio Governors Award for the Arts, Musical America Magazine’s “Young Artists of the Year,” ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, and is two-time winner of The Guarneri Quartet Award Artistic Excellence, and recipients of more than 10 Chamber Music America Residency Partnership Grants. Jazz guitarist Pasquale Grasso comes to YSU for a master class and performance. The Italian-born, New York-based musician is known for a pianistic approach to jazz guitar. The winner of the inaugural Wes Montgomery International Jazz Guitar Competition, Grasso has gone on to release several highly acclaimed albums for Sony Master Works. His most recent release is 2022’s “BeBop!,” a tribute to be-bop pioneers Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. The Youngstown-based band is led by singer-songwriter and guitarist Jackie Popovec. The group’s “family band” includes drummer Owen Davis, bassist Brendan Burke, keyboardist Nathan Anthony and the Youngstown Horns featuring Kyle O’Donnell on trumpet, Brian Mayle on trombone, and Garret Kuchmaner on saxophone.
