Editor’s note: This set was one of series of photo albums Metro Monthly assembled and published in the early months of the COVID-19 lockdown. Most were produced for release on the weekend. This set was originally published on April 11, 2020, a Saturday.

The following postcards capture downtown Warren and area landmarks at various times in the city’s history.

Although postcards can help document an era, they weren’t always true depictions of a street scene. Artists in distant production houses hand colored buildings, removed overhead wires or painted in features like clouds, blue skies and American flags.

Liberties were taken because a postcard was, at its heart, promotional. Although many early cards were printed in Germany, production shifted to the United States when tariffs were added to a range of imported products prior to World War I.

Still, vintage postcards serve as interesting windows into an era.
