The Warren Philharmonic Orchestra’s 55th season subscription is now under way.
SUSAN DAVENNY WYNER (WGPH)The 2020-2021 season will feature two concerts, Sunday, Oct. 4, 2020 and April 11, 2021, at First Presbyterian Church, 256 Mahoning Ave., N.W., Warren. Concerts begin at 3 p.m. and will be under the direction of conductor Susan Davenny Wyner.
The fall performance, “A Firebird’s Magic!,” will feature “The Firebird Suite” by Igor Stravinsky. In addition, the concert features “Symphony No. 31” by Mozart, “Pulse” (2003) by Margaret Brouwer, and “Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune” and “Fêtes” from “Nocturnes” by Debussy. This performance had been scheduled for the spring 2020 concert, but was moved to the 2020-2021 season due to the pandemic.
JASON VIEAUXGrammy Award-winning guitarist Jason Vieaux will join the orchestra for “Quixotic Journeys!” on April 11. The orchestra will perform “Overture for a Midsummer Night’s Dream” by Mendelssohn, “Sun Dance” (2020) by Augusta Read Thomas, “Concierto de Aranjuez” for guitar and orchestra by Joaquín Rodrigo (with guest soloist Jason Vieaux), and “Symphony in C Major” by Bizet.
“In these difficult and frightening times, music has the power to reach deep in us – to touch on rich emotions, to transport us to different worlds and senses of time,” said Davenny Wyner.
“Live performance draws us together as a community as we are caught up in the beauty and adventure of the moment. The Warren Philharmonic’s programs this season highlight the extraordinary skills and virtuosity of our musicians and feature a wide range of music from the 1700s up to works just written.” The fall concert features the Ohio premiere of “Pulse” by Cleveland composer Margaret Brouwer.
“I am excited to welcome Grammy-winning guitarist Jason Vieaux and to present a hot-off-the-page work by Augusta Read Thomas, a striking American composer and Pulitzer Prize finalist,” noted Davenny Wyner about the spring concert. The performance opens and closes with works by Mendelssohn and Bizet.
The Warren Philharmonic Orchestra is comprised of 50 local professional musicians. In addition to its concerts, the orchestra performs free school concerts for thousands of area school children.
