WYSU announces holiday programs through Christmas Day | On Christmas Eve, VocalEssence will feature the world premiere of two carols from its annual Christmas Carol Contest.
WYSU (88.5 FM), the public radio service of Youngstown State University, will air special holiday programs from Tuesday, Dec. 15 through Christmas Day (Friday, Dec. 25).
Holiday programs include:
• Classical Music with Gary Sexton – Peter Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker,” Act 1. The Berlin Philharmonic performs with Semyon Bychkov conducting. Noon, Tuesday, Dec. 15.
• Classical Music with Gary Sexton – Peter Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker,” Act 2. The Berlin Philharmonic performs with Semyon Bychkov conducting. Noon, Wednesday, Dec. 16.
• Classical Music with Gary Sexton – “Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Christmas Oratorio,” Part One (for the First Day of Christmas). The Munich Bach Orchestra and Choir perform with Karl Richter conducting. Noon, Friday, Dec. 18.
• “A Paul Winter Winter Solstice” – Features a performance by the Paul Winter Consort and the glorious pipe organ at New York’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine. 7 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 20.
• Classical Music with Gary Sexton – George Frideric Handel’s “Messiah,” Part 1, plus “Hallelujah Chorus.” Gabrieli Consort and Players perform with Paul McCreesh conducting. Noon, Monday, Dec. 21.
Christmas Eve
• “Welcome Christmas!” – This perennial Christmas favorite from VocalEssence includes the world premiere of two carols from the annual Christmas Carol Contest. 9-10 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 24.
• “A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols” – This beloved, annual Christmas tradition features a live service of word and music from the Chapel of King’s College in Cambridge, England. 10 a.m.-noon.
• An afternoon of holiday favorites from Classical 24. Noon-3 p.m.
• “Performance Today” – Fred Child hosts this annual musical celebration of Christmas from various concert halls, churches, and auditoriums. 7-9 p.m.
Christmas Day
• “All is Bright: Contemplative Music for Christmas” – An hour of choral music that tells the traditional Christmas story. Features performances by Cantus, Chanticleer, Cambridge Singers, Bryn Terfel, Emma Kirkby, and Jessye Norman. 9-10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 25.
• “Christmas with the Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square” – Includes arrangements of familiar carols and lesser-known melodies. 10-11 a.m.
• “Hollywood Holiday” – A festive musical retrospective of some of Hollywood’s most-cherished films inspired by Charles Dickens’ classic character, Ebenezer Scrooge. 11 a.m.-noon.
• “Hygge Holiday: Cozy Classics” – Features a mix of nostalgic, wintertime classical pieces. Noon-1 p.m.
• “St. Olaf Christmas Festival” – Includes hymns, carols, choral works and orchestral selections. Features more than 500 student musicians in five choirs, and the St. Olaf Orchestra. 1-2 p.m.

• “A Choral Christmas with Stile Antico” – Stile Antico, the award-winning choir from London, pays a visit to St. Paul’s church on Harvard Square for a concert of sacred music for the Christmas season. Features the most acclaimed composers of the Renaissance. 2-3 p.m.

• “Jazz Night in America: A Holiday Celebration” – A night of swinging holiday classics featuring The Sherman Irby sextet. Recorded live from Dizzy’s Club at Jazz At Lincoln Center. Christian McBride hosts. 7-8 p.m.
