WYSU-FM to air special holiday programming Dec. 22-26

WYSU will broadcast ‘A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols,’ as part of its special holiday programs. This worldwide Christmas Eve service features a broadcast of biblical readings, carols and related seasonal classical music performed in the renowned Chapel of King’s College in Cambridge, England. WYSU-FM, the public radio station at Youngstown State University, is announcing its special programming for the Christmas season. Programs will air Dec. 22-26 and include sacred music, jazz and songs from Christmas-themed movies.

Special programs include:

Wednesday, Dec. 22
  • Classical Music with Gary Sexton. Features two hours of holiday-classical favorites. 11 a.m.
  • Performance Today. Includes live performances of holiday music from around the country. 7 p.m.
Thursday, Dec. 23
  • Hollywood Holiday. Lynne Warfel takes listeners on a one-hour musical retrospective of some of Hollywood’s most cherished Christmas-themed movies. Selections feature scores from “Scrooge, the Musical,” “A Muppet Christmas Carol,” “The Polar Express,” “It’s a Wonderful Life” and others. 9 a.m.
  • Hygge Holiday. Hygge (HYOO-guh) translates to taking pleasure in warm and gentle things. This program includes nostalgic favorites. Hosted by Elena See. 10 a.m.
  • Classical Music with Gary Sexton. Features two hours of holiday-classical favorites. 11 a.m.
  • A Chanticleer Christmas. Holiday favorites presented live by Chanticleer, the 12-man ensemble known as “an orchestra of voices.” 1 p.m.
  • A Choral Christmas with Stile Antico. Stile Antico pays a visit to St. Paul’s church on Harvard Square for a concert of sacred music. Includes holiday selections by the most acclaimed composers of the Renaissance. 2 p.m.
  • Performance Today. Features live performances of holiday music from around the country. 7 p.m.
  • St. Olaf Christmas Festival. Includes sacred choral and instrumental music from many traditions: hymns, classical masterworks, folk songs and African-American spirituals. The festival allows listeners from around the globe to participate in one of the nation’s most-treasured holiday celebrations. 9 p.m.
Friday, Dec. 24 (Christmas Eve)
  • Welcome Christmas. This program presents traditional carols and new discoveries, including the world premiere of two carols from the annual Christmas Carol Contest. 9 a.m.
  • A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. This worldwide Christmas Eve service features a broadcast of biblical readings, carols and related seasonal classical music. The special will be presented by one of the world’s foremost choirs of men and boys and performed in the acoustically and architecturally renowned Chapel of King’s College in Cambridge, England. 10 a.m.
  • Christmas with the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square. The choir continues its tradition of great artistry with arrangements of familiar carols and lesser-known melodies that are becoming new classics. Noon.
  • All is Bright. Features a program of contemplative music related to the Christmas season and its symbolism. The program uses sacred choral music to tell the traditional Christmas story with songs about angels, the star and the manger. Featured artists include Cantus, Chanticleer, Cambridge Singers, Bryn Terfel, Emma Kirkby, Jessye Norman and a variety of choirs. 1 p.m.
  • A Soulful Christmas. Features uplifting, relevant music in classical, gospel, spiritual and jazz-inspired styles. 2 p.m.
  • Jazz with David Basse. Features a Christmas Eve of holiday jazz. 7 p.m.
Saturday, Dec. 25 (Christmas Day)
  • WYSU-FM will feature network programming, many with seasonal themes. All day.
Sunday, Dec. 26
  • Ford’s Theatre Presents: A Christmas Carol – WAMU and Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. will present a contemporary radio play of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” featuring acclaimed Washington actor Craig Wallace as Ebenezer Scrooge and public radio broadcaster Murray Horwitz as the narrator. 4 p.m.
