Lit Youngstown’s First Wednesday Reader Series. Soap Gallery, 117 S. Champion St., Youngstown. Lit Youngstown will present Kent poet and fiction writer Kelly Hambly and Youngstown poet Jimmy Sutman as part of its First Wednesday Reader Series. The event, which will be co-hosted by Denise Sculli, is free and open to the public. An open mic will follow the featured readers. Hambly writes poetry, creative nonfiction, and fiction as a way of connecting her past, present, and future to help heal generational trauma. Sutman is the director of ISLE Inc. and Purple Cat, Valley-based organizations which provide services for adults with autism, cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, and traumatic brain injury. He is the founder of goldenstringradio.org…, a radio station run by adults with disabilities. This new jazz piano trio comes to Youngstown as part of the Pipino Performing Arts Series. Vijay has been named “Pianist of the Year” by the Jazz Journalists Association. Iyer will be performing with Matt Brewer (bass) and Jeremy Dutton (drums). (The Vijay Iyer Trio performed key sets at Newport Jazz and Detroit Jazz Festivals over the summer.) Iyer’s 2021 release of “Uneasy” was one of the best-reviewed albums of last year: Pitchfork (Best New Music), the New Yorker, NPR Music, and Jazz Times. In addition to playing music from “Uneasy,” Iyer – a MacArthur fellow and Harvard professor – will be performing new music as well. Iyer was recently featured in Pitchfork’s recurring Music That Made Me series and premiered a newly commissioned work entitled “Ghosts Everywhere I Go” last April at Chicago’s Logan Center For The Arts. Iyer just returned to Harvard for a new semester, where he’s been a professor since 2014. He is currently instructing a Ph.D. program that he founded called Creative Practice and Critical Inquiry. 7:30 p.m.

A Trip to the City: A Visit to the Virgo Galaxy Cluster. Ward Beecher Planetarium, YSU campus, One University Plaza, Youngstown 44555. 330-941-1370. The Virgo Cluster is the nearest galaxy cluster to Earth, making it one of the most useful laboratories we have in understanding how galaxies form and evolve. Within such dense (city-like) galactic environments, galaxies interact frequently, and the debris from these events allows us to trace the history of galaxy clusters. This program will give a brief tour of the Virgo cluster, which includes results from a new and ongoing deep, wide-field imaging study (the Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey) of the entire cluster. Program host Dr. Patrick Durrell will describe searches for stars dwarf galaxies, and globular clusters that live in the spaces between the larger galaxies in the cluster.
