YSU razes 2 remaining houses in Arlington Avenue Historic District
Arlington Avenue in 1906. Arlington originated at Bryson Street and continued west to Belmont Avenue. Much of it was removed during the expansion of Youngstown State University. From “Art Work of Youngstown,” published in 1906. (Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County)

Two remaining houses in the Arlington Avenue Historic District were demolished today near the campus of Youngstown State University.

The houses were located at 337 and 359 Arlington St. between Fifth and Belmont avenues.

According to the Mahoning County Auditor, three parcels were transferred on May 31 from Woods Rentals of Ohio Inc. to the Youngstown State University Foundation in a $220,000 sale.

Arlington Avenue was put on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The nomination recognized houses in the 300 block of Arlington (304-373) and was one of the earliest historic districts in the city.

Much of the district was demolished in the early 1990s as YSU expanded west of Fifth Avenue.
