YWCA Mahoning Valley is announcing its virtual Y-Girls STEAM Ahead camp, which runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, from July 27 to Aug. 7. Enrollment is free.
The online camp will focus on engaging middle school girls in science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics, in an effort to encourage their pursuit of STEAM careers later in life.
The camp includes the Summer Manufacturing Institute (in collaboration with Oh Wow! Children’s Center for Science and Technology) with a focus on biomedical engineering. Sessions include a Biz 3D and Entrepreneurship component that allows participants to learn about 3D printing and how to create a business.
Biz 3D is supported by the INVENTORcloud Program, a portfolio company of Youngstown Business Incubator and member of America Makes.
In addition, campers will engage in art projects such as natural tie-dye, purse/bag transformation, painting, storytelling, cooking demonstrations and gardening. DIY kits will be given to participants to complete projects with items found in their homes.
Participants will work on STEAM projects from their home computer, laptop or Chromebook. A webcam and a microphone will be needed to participate.
Space is limited. Call 330-746-6361, extension 126, by July 17 to register or for more information.
The virtual camp is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Warren, Neckerman Foundation, PhRMA, The William J. Bruder Trust, the Walter E. and Caroline H. Watson Foundation and United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley.
